THE GENERAL AREA.
Our properties are situated in south east Spain on the Mar menor. For those who are unfamiliar with this area, Mar Menor (Little Sea) is a unique area located on the east coast of Spain, within the region of Murcia, just above the city of Cartagena. Few regions have the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean shore, but this region has both. The coastline and beaches here slope gently into what appears to be the sea, but the tide doesn't affect these beaches, making it ideal for water lovers and safe for children. This strange phenominan occurs because a strip of land (La Manga) juts out from the mainland some distance down the coast, and forms a water break for these fortunate beaches, protecting them from the main seas and making the sea here much warmer! Mar Menor is part of the Costa Calida.
The area dates back to prehistoric times but most remains found date from the Roman and Arabic periods. The Romans valued the area highly and developed a valuable salt industry. It was about 1000 years ago that the "lake" took on the appearance it has today. The Romans called it Belich and referred to it as a port of refuge. It was much deeper in those times so could cope with even the largest of vessels. Over the last hundred years or so, the area has developed into a tourist haven. As well as the natural importance of the area the mud and clay are said to have therapeutic properties, known for centuries. The average temperature here is higher than the rest of spain, and the winters are mild, very rarely falling below 10ºC. Rain is also rare here. With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and the mild climate, the water here can reach 30º in August. The coast of the Mar Menor is flanked by small towns, in the past homes to fishermen and today, tourist enclaves. The population of this area triples during August as the Spanish flock to the best beaches in Spain. This area is held in high esteem by the Spanish, who favour it as their haven for family holidays. That says it all! The area offers several fabulous golf courses, municipal parks and the famous resort of La Manga. Please see the golf linfo at the bottom of this page for more info on courses in this area.La Manga has more than 40km of beaches and the unique possibility of choosing between two seas with very different water temperatures, one with waves and one practically calm all year long. The number of hotels at La Manga make up 50% of the total hotels in the region. With so much water here there is no wonder that the area is a haven for watersports. The possibilities here are endless -from sailing to diving, windsurfing and jetskiing, you can find it all on your doorstep.
If watersports aren't your thing, the area offers a host of other opportunities to keep your family returning year after year.

The bustling market every saturday is within a minutes walk of both properties
GOLFING IN THIS AREA. The question is do we have enough space????!
La Serena
3 mins by car. 18 hole very challenging brand new course, lots of water and sand, beautiful condition. SUPERB DRIVING RANGE and practise putting facilities
Roda Golf,
3 minutes by car- 18 hole established course, lots of water not quite as challanging as La Serena, not played it but have been told by the locals its like a championship course. SUPERB DRIVING RANGE and practise putting facilities
Las Ramblas.
15 mins by car. A "rambla" is a deep, dry ravine. Need I say more? Pick your way around with care, and interesting course, the less able golfers will need a bag of golf balls. Not a long course, but a fabulous test of golf. (thats from a long hitter!)
Campoamor
15 mins by car. 18 holes of pure enjoyment. Not too difficult a nice one to break you in gently
La Manga.
20 minutes by car. 3 courses to chose from, if you know golf, you know La Manga
Mosa Trajectrum Golf Resort.
15 minutes by car. Here you will be able to enjoy an ecological 27-hole Championship golf course built to the exacting standards set by the PGA and USGA. The Mosa Trajectrum golf course runs through a resort, creating a spectacular and challenging landscape consisting of varied plants and trees, desert cacti, open rock-faces and a multitude of water features.
Altorreal Golf Club .
Altorreal Golf Club is situated 30 minutes by car (maximum, depending on traffic)in a natural environment with more than 20,000 trees including olive, pine and carob trees.
Altorreal has been designed by one of the greatest international specialists in this field, Dave Thomas. Designed on the site of two curved 9 hole course beginning and ending at the same point. There are six lake areas that come into play, adding more challenging aspects to the course.
El Valle Golf Club, 15 minutes by car
18 holes, par 71 designed by Nicklaus Design. This course may be considered one of the most attractive courses. The holes snake through the arid Murcian landscape, and are framed by the desert style and mountainous surroundings. These provide a pretty picture when coupled with the meticulaously cared for greens of the course, which contrast with the ochre of the sand. Take a bucket and spade and a fishing net to get your ball out of the water!!
La Finca. 40 minutes by car.
A true championship course which plays home to several international competitions both professional and amateur, knocks spots off La Manga.
